Lip filler is a hydrophilic product, meaning that it draws moisture and water to your skin. Lip filler augments (adds volume) your lips as well as giving a nice shape to key parts of the lips e.g. cupid’s bow and vermillion border. The end result is making the lips an optimal size as well as an optimal shape to increase overall attractiveness and make the subject look more youthful.
Anyone who is Wanting to add volume to their lips
Trying to correct asymmetries
Making their lips more proportional
Soften lines around the mouth which may be caused by smoking
Looking to up downturned lips
Hyaluronic acid provides volume to the treatment area by filling the cavity. As it is a hydrophilic product, it will draw water into the area to augment it. There are several differnt different HA products you can use, it all depends on what you are trying to achieve. For volume you may use a thicker, more structured product. If you just want to target the lines around the mouth, you might use something softer. Whatever the aim, you should always seek to make them natural. Lip Filler is a temporary treatment and will last in the region of 6-12 months. This will depend on the subject e.g. rate of metabolism etc.
At Balmoral Aesthetics Belfast, we exclusively use hyaluronic acid filler. This is because it’s a naturally occurring sugar that creates a smooth, natural look with very low incidence of side effects. The temporary aspect is a positive but indeed the limitation is having to get it re-done every 6-12 months.
If you want to correct symmetry, add volume, improve the cupid’s bow, turn up the lips or fix the smoker lines, we can achieve this.
Hyaluronic acid fillers are a great invention as they offer a safe but effective aesthetic difference. The overall affect can be life changing.
The procedure itself takes anywhere between 15-30 minutes and shouldn’t require any recovery time. A topical anaesthetic will be applied to reduce comfort during the procedure. In cases where a cannula is used, there will also be some injected anaesthetic for further comfort. Further to these pain reducing methods, there is anaesthetic mixed in with the filler that will reduce pain. The filler is then injected and fed through some channels in the cavity of your lips to achieve a smooth and natural look. A cannula may be used depending on the patient’s goals.
A 1 to 1 consultation may be recommended in order to decide if lip filler is for you and what your goals are. In general, if you want to add volume, shape or want to get rid of the lips, then lip filler is for you.
We use the Juvéderm family of products as well as one or two products from the brand Restylane and Aliaxin. Which filler you receive is dependent on your goals and the advice of your injector.
Once you arrive at the clinic in Blefast, the injector will obtain the full medical history (surgical procedures, chronic conditions, allergies etc.), and a list of any current medications you are currently taking, including any vitamins or supplements.
It may be advisable to omit medications that thin the blood as this will increase the chance of blood and bruising e.g. warfarin, advil and ibuprofen).
Most Lip Fillers used today contain hyaluronic acid, this is naturally forming in the body so there is very little chance of a reaction. If you are allergic to any of the proteins used to make hyaluronic acid, you are just hypertensive and have severe reactions to anything; this might be a case to not continue. You may also be allergic to lidocaine (which is used in the topical anesthetic), in which case this shouldn’t be used. Bleeding disorders would also be a contraindication.
If you have an injury near the site of injection it’s advisable to wait until that heals before scheduling your appointment. This also include cold sores, which are a type of herpes virus. The risk of it spreading due to the filler is very high. Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals should wait until after these events as the risks are unknown.
The full affect is usually immediate but it might take a week to see further effect.
Lip fillers can typically last anywhere between 6 and 12 months or longer. Because the metabolisation happens over time, most people come back before it is fully dissolved in order to keep the look up. It should be the patients decision on when it is time but they may seek a consultation with the injector to confirm if they are ready for another treatment. There are many factors that determine the length of time the treatment last, these are unknown but an idea of the length of time it will last will be known after first treatment.
There are a few known side effects of this treatment, these will be discussed prior to treatment. All the side effects are uncommon and will go away or can be treated easily
Bruising or swelling may occur immediately after treatment
Bleeding around injection sites
Inflammation and pain
Cold sores and blisters
